Event Synopsis

Planners will benefit by gaining insights into how cities can be understood as complex systems, offering a scientific lens to interpret human nature and social change. The lecture will explore why cities exist and what drives their diversity, innovation, and resilience, as well as how urban environments shape wealth, institutions, mental health, and social tolerance. It will also highlight how research on cities can provide predictions for the future of urban life, before returning to the practical challenges of urban planning to discuss the current paradigm shift towards embracing complexity and creating more human-centered, adaptive cities.
