The lecture stresses the functions and importance of urban identity for the citizens, visitors, and economy of any city. Cities have real histories that have led to their physical form. It is necessary for urban designer to understand the urban form, and thus the history thereof. The lecture presents results of the historical morphological research of the American city of Detroit and the Chinese city of Wuhan.
