Topic Future of Urban Development and Planning in the new world Speaker Dr Liu Thai-Ker Chairman, Morrow Architects and Planners (Singapore) Dr Liu Thai Ker spent 24 years in Singapore’s public sector, playing a significant role in public housing development as well the planning and implementation of the 1991 Singapore Master Plan. Through a rich collection of feedback from members of the public over the decades, he came to believe that it was possible and necessary to plan and build a city to last. After leaving the public sector, with all the valuable insights gained, Dr Liu continues to develop and refine his planning methodology, which has been shared across over 60 cities worldwide. Summary Admittedly, the new world is fast paced andtechnological bolstered. It emboldens a culture of change, happening atunprecedented speed. However, planners should not too readily subscribe to that notion. It is most crucial for planners to understand the irresponsibilities and the implications when planning a City. As a City is constructed of concrete and steel, through intelligent planning, change while inevitable, must be minimised as it is environmentally damaging and resource draining. The City therefore must be designed for permanence as well as a receptor for technological developments. In this session, Dr Liu will be sharing his experiences and planning methodology on urban planning in a world of rapidly changing social values, lifestyle, and technology. |
