Event Synopsis

How can tropical cities maximise the benefits from nature? Explore how urban ecosystem services can improve cities and how this can be applied in design through this webinar.

There is growing awareness of the benefits of using natural ecological processes to improve the quality of life in cities. While most research done on this topic relates to the temperate regions of Europe and North America, this webinar will focus predominantly upon studies conducted in the humid tropics.

The event brings together leading researchers and practitioners interested in the application of ecosystem services in the urban landscape. The keynote lectures feature recent research presented from the perspectives of an ecologist, a landscape designer and an environmental modeller:

  • Prof. Peter Edwards Principal Investigator of Ecosystem Services Project at Future Cities Laboratory at the Singapore-ETH Centre, Singapore
  • Prof. Mark McDonnell, University of Melbourne, Australia
  • Prof. Ranil Senanayake, EarthRestoration, Sri Lanka
  • Prof. Elie Bou-Zeid, Princeton University, USA

These lectures will be followed by a presentation by the ‘Ecosystem Services in Urban Landscapes’ team at the Future Cities Laboratory, which focuses mainly upon Singapore. The final discussion will consider both future research needs and how knowledge about ecosystem services can be used to improve urban planning and landscape design.
