Event Synopsis

The world is becoming increasingly urbanized; the accelerated expansion of the metropolitan regions is a visible phenomenon in the 21st century. As a result, the economic, social, cultural and environmental transformations in the last decades have led to profound new territorial reorganization processes ranging from new patterns for the location of urban activity to the appearance of significant changes in the role of metropolitan areas. In this context, the challenges of cities are posed on a metropolitan scale and not only locally. How are metropolitan areas planned? What was the process of their evolution? What are the factors that contributed to their success and failure?

There are different ways with which metropolitan areas develop successfully. The objective of this webinar is to analyze those various approaches to metropolitan planning from a comparative perspective, examining their advantages and disadvantages and through concrete examples. It will focus mainly on the cases of Madrid and Singapore because of the positive and also negative lessons we can learn from both cases.

The webinar will address the following questions:

• How are metropolitan areas planned? What was the scope of the metropolitan plan? What was the evolution process? What planning philosophy, as well as planning approaches and methodologies were applied in the development of the plan?
• How did Madrid and Singapore manage the development and growth process? What factors contributed to the success of their metropolitan plan? How does social and political culture impact on a metropolitan area’s success or failure?
• What are the specific planning issues and challenges that metropolitan areas of Madrid and Singapore faced – in its institutional, financial, economic and social dimensions – and how did they address these issues and challenges?
